Trout can be a picky bunch sometimes. Luckily there are tons of trout fishing baits out there. From fly fishing flies that look like worms to minnow lures to crawfish. If you don’t catch anything using one bait, grab another and keep trying. We will give you the scoop on the best trout fishing baits and lures you need to keep in your tackle box.
Plastic Baits
The beauty of plastic lures is that they can resemble just about anything. You can imitate worms, crawfish, bugs, frogs, mice, bait fish. These lures also don’t cost an arm and a leg, cough cough looking at you expensive crankbaits. We recommend trying small crawfish, mites, and Berkley Gulp! worms. We say this specific brands because it offers a unique scent designed to attract trout.
Bug-Like Lures
What we mean by “bug-like” is the ability for the lure to imitate the shape of bugs. Trout love bugs! That’s why many fly fishing flies tend to look like them. The Mepps Thunder Bug looks just like a bug. Use a larger lure to try and catch larger trout. We like the brown colored lure, but test out a few different ones as trout will change their feeding habits based on location, water color, and temperature.
Luhr Jensen
This company is known for their lures. They’re owned by Rapala, maker of many infamous lures you probably use if you go bass fishing. They offer quite a few lures specifically for trout fishing. These long spoon shaped lures are popular among trout fishermen. They come in tons of color patterns, and at least one will catch you some fish.
Hard Baits
There are so many hard baits out there! There are crankbaits, topwater baits, spoons. It can be hard to know which is just right for catching trout. You really can’t go wrong with buying a few of varying colors and testing them out. One we recommend is the Rapala Shad Rap. It comes in a variety of colors that are sure to catch a trout’s eye (and stomach).
